OUR STORY
LATTICE DEVELOPMENT NETWORK is a 501(c)3 nonprofit development organization based in Greeley, Colorado. LDN was formed in 2010 in response to the earthquake in Haiti to help provide technical assistance in low-cost, earthquake resistant housing during the re-construction.
Prior to this, at the start of the war between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan in 1979, Thor and Debi Armstrong led a team of volunteers into Pakistan to assist the Afghan refugees. The war plunged the fledgling Muslim Republic into chaos and resulted in the flight of 5 million Afghans to neighboring countries. Between 1982-1983, the team designed and built low-cost, multi-purpose, geodesic dome homes for use as refugee shelters and our first 2,000 Dome Housing Project for Afghan refugees was underway with initial funding from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The project grew and adapted to the ever changing needs of the flood of refugees pouring out of Afghanistan but the primary focus was always to build as safely, quickly, and cheaply for as many people as possible. The needs are overwhelming, the resources few. In Pakistan and Afghanistan, the project built over 1,850 prefab concrete geodesic dome homes as well as hundreds of other traditional schools, clinics and shelters. The project was a success and continued on with private and government funding for many years.

An attempt on Thor’s life eventually led Thor and Debi to return home and expand globally to help meet the growing demand for refugee shelter assistance. They formed more teams, and developed more shelter relief projects that have helped thousands of refugees and displaced people in over 12 countries, including; Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kurdistan/Iraq, Tajikistan, India, Sri Lanka, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Western Sahara/Algeria, Haiti, Burundi, and Honduras.
The result has been the construction of over 100,000 shelters and homes to refugees and displaced people around the world. We thank God and all of our faithful supporters through the years and for all that’s been able accomplish so far.
We look forward to another year of supporting our network partners to the best of our ability and to assist them anyway that we can. We pray God’s blessing on their work and that they continue to develop, grow and be a blessing and a hope to many in Jesus’ name.
We value your continued support – there’s still so much to do.
